When I followed my intuition to buy my 3rd horse in 1987, I had no idea how deeply this decision would affect me or that this horse would help me change my life direction.
The first time I saw Ibis, he was scrawny, all bones, long mane, flat, broken hooves badly in need of a trim, scrapes and cuts and overall dull. I was looking to buy a horse I could use for lessons, someone to teach off of, who I could give a tune up to, and turn
around and sell in 6 months. I was still new in Vermont and didnât yet have a lot of horse connections. I had already looked at a half
dozen horses at this dealerâs farm.
We had walked to the rocky, crowded, back paddock as she looked around at the horses to see who else to show me. I asked, âWho is the little chestnut horse?â âOh,â she said, âYou donât want him. He used to race and just
came off the truck yesterday from Florida. He has been rearing, very difficult and not at all what you are looking for.â
Something pulled at me.
I asked her to take him out so I could take a look anyway.
She shrugged, tried to talk me out of it and pulled him out anyway. Â She was right. He was not at all what I had said I was looking for. Â He was small, a thoroughbred off the track, had an uncomfortable choppy trot, and he knew nothing! Something inside of me wanted him anyway. Â I bought him on the spot for a small price and had him shipped home that night.
Life with Ibis started out as anything but easy. We have not always gotten along very well. In fact, because we didnât get along well and I couldnât figure out how to reach him were the main motivators for my getting into TTEAM, Centered Riding, Animal Communication and much of the other work I have gotten into!
I thought I was looking for a horse to use for lessons that I could turn around and sell after I cleaned him up, did some âfine tuningâ and got some lesson miles on him. I had no idea that whole new worlds were in front of me.
Well, I got my lesson horse alright! Â And he has been the âlesson horseâ of a lifetime.
I just had absolutely no idea that the lessons I was about to embark on were larger then life, and had much more involved than what I had envisioned!
When I followed my intuition to buy a new horse, to get the one I chose, I also began opening the doors to learn my own lessons that I needed in order to get on board with my larger life purpose.
And what a journey it has been so far!
For those of you who donât know him, Ibis is the horse pictured at the top in the heading banner of my website â honoring his important place and presence in my life and work, and, he is greeter to all who want to open their own doors into the depths of their beings.
I encourage you to take some time for reflection as the holidays approach.
How have all of your furry, feathered, finned, scaley, and human friends past and present influenced your life, brought you to new and unexpected experiences and helped you to open more deeply and fully?
When animals choose to be with us, and we follow
our intuition to choose them, we have so many gifts to be
thankful for.
Holiday Blessings to you and all of yours,
