Re-Orienting Loss, Trauma, Brain-Injuries

By Sandy Rakowitz Leave a Comment

On this day of remembrance and honoring for 9/11….

I am bringing up a new conversation…
…a new perspective…

about
Re-Orienting through Shock, Loss, Trauma,
and even Brain Injuries
through Creativity and Memorials.

There are many entry points into the body’s and psyche’s innate process for healing.

All are intricately linked via the heart…. a portal for loving and connecting
– into consciousness, across dimensions, in all relationships.

Re-Orientation – What is Re-Orienting?

After shocking news, or experiences, like the sudden loss of a loved one,
people often feel disoriented.  It is a common experience.

The Oxford Dictionary says this: Orient – “find one’s position again in relation to one’s surroundings.

“slowly they advanced, stopping every so often and then reorienting themselves.”

Disruption in Trauma

Many experience trauma with the death of a loved one.
The orienting response everyone has gets disrupted.

Emotions and memories can get stuck in the nervous system, emotions, brain, and body.
The experience can be stuck in Freeze reaction.
One way being stuck can show up is long term grief, or guilt.

Creativity for Gently Re-Orienting

When emotions are stuck and have moved into long held patterns
in the body, heart and psyche, getting unstuck through re-orienting is a way through.

Two of the effective ways I have used to Re-Orient
are Tellington TTouch and, caringly, mindfully using creativity as a tool,
as I like to call it – Art for the Heart.

Both have proven themselves in helping to release trauma holding patterns.
This has been remarkably, and sometimes surprisingly gentle and effective.

Creativity and Memorials

Memorials carved into rocks and stone are one of the oldest
forms of honoring loved ones
.

There are good reasons this practice has continued across centuries.

The process of creating and completing a simple memorial gives space
for your orienting response to complete it’s response.

Re-orienting to a new reality, new day-to-day routines is part of the healing process.
But when you are in a holding or frozen pattern, that can be very challenging.

Simple brush strokes, use of color application, with the intention of honoring your
loved one all give the brain and heart the chance to re-orient, to shift and soothe the brain and nervous system.

People are sometimes concerned that creating a memorial can bring up emotions.

Yet, using simple creativity can help the Re-Orienting Process immensely.
(even if you feel like you do not have a creative bone in your body)

Letting yourself feel your love,
bringing forward what you treasure and honor about someone,
while creating something beautiful and positive gives yourself a safe,
held space to move through and gently release held emotions,

Reorienting uses of Creativity to help you

Sandy opened my eyes and heart into viewing "things differently" in our world. Through her, I have learned how to understand my dogs in a way that I never thought possible. I have more understanding, therefore more patience for our most loving companions. It has definitely made me a better person and I believe a better trainer.
